Hotel Industry as a career

There's a very interesting article which I came across that I'd like to share. It talks about how long it takes on average for someone who starts all the way at the bottom (receptionist, etc) to get all the way to the top as a General Manager. In Asia, it takes 16.5 years compared to America at 14.75 years. If you join as a management trainee, it takes on average 14.8 years.

Sounds like a long time doesn't it?

What the article does not show is that most people working in this industry does not become GMs. The article does not show you the vast number of career opportunities that you can be exposed to beyond hotels. Like a lecturer for example.

The article does not show you that as a hotelier, the opportunity to travel is ever increasing. Every other week there is a new hotel being launched and this pattern does not look like it's going to decrease.

Finally, the article does not show relative to other industries and positions the length of time it takes to rise from the bottom to the top and hence the figures look very large. If you are good and willing to try new things, the time taken would probably be much shorter!

Yes, they should make me the ambassador for the hotel industry!

Hi Mr Lee!!

It's been quite some time and I was really shocked to find out you're no longer with TP. Nonetheless, good luck with your new job!!
