Misconception

The exam for my subject which I tutor was held a couple of days ago. When the students came out, many were complaining "How come the paper wasn't related to the lectures? How come so hard?!!? How come...how come...how come...."

Well I thought I'd do an entry to clear the air once and for all.

1. This is a level 3 subject. Don't expect to pass by simply using the "remember and regurgitate" technique. Won't work. You actually need to think.

2. The purpose of a revision lecture is NOT to provide you with hints. A revision lecture is exactly that; a revision. Going through everything you've learnt during the semester and maybe if you're lucky, the lecture may give you direct/indirect hints.

3. If the hints given does not come out, don't blame the lecturer. If the hints all came out in the paper, it wouldn't be called hints. It would be known as answers.

4. Think about why some students found the paper easy? Is it because they're smarter? Not necessarily. Perhaps they did more work and studied smarter (not harder). And oh, they actually did some thinking.

5. It's too late to read that pristine new text book that you've ignored the whole semeseter on the last week of the semester.

The purpose of this entry is not to put students down. Rather I hope that this would make you think about how you approach learning and hopefully will lead you to study smarter and therefore get better marks. I know it's a tough week for a lot of students but think of the markings the lecturers have to do now! It's not easy as well. Anyway, good luck to you all for your rest of your paper.

Back to marking....
