A day of shame and sadness

It is with great feelings of sadness, anger and disappointment that I ready today's article in the Sydney Morning Herald on the race riot in Cronulla. What started out as a normal weekend with people doing their own business turned into some sort of hell scene out of a movie involving thugs attacking people on the beach! I don't want to say too much because you can read about it and I am sure it'll be covered in the news here.

I've stayed in Australia for about 14+ years. Yes, of course discrimination and racism do occur. But overall, it's been a wonderful 14 years that my family have enjoyed. We lived and made friends with people from all walks of life. Australia was, is and will always be a beautiful country. The actions of a few will not thwart this. As globalisation continues to build momentum, many advanced countries will see more and more of their population "mixed". People will have to learn to live with each other and rather than critisize/ostrisize, why can't we all just live together and enjoy the fruits of this "mixture"?

The truth is, discrimination occurs in every country. Whether we want to admit it or not, whether we have experienced it or not, whether know about it is immaterial. I'm trying to think of something inspirational to write but I can't. Probably because it's 1:44am. We already live in a world that is so troubled, why add fuel to the fire?
